More on Healthcare

Posted in Uncategorized on 12/08/2009 by KingOfAnkh

The majority of the UK is now up in arms about these American fanatics who are against social healthcare. I know they are only a vocal minority but when a few idiots are shouting very loudly, it tars the whole nation, especially when they are attacking the UK's finest institution. The NHS.

I think everyone has a tale to tell about how their lives were saved the by free medical aid offered in Britain, this is why we all feel so strongly about the slurs being thrown from over the pond.
The worst one I have heard so far is by one of our own MEP's, Daniel Hannan, who denounced the NHS on one of those Fox News programs. You can see his interview here or read the transcription. http://bit.ly/3sNDk
This guy is up for re-election in two months, talk about falling onto your own sword.  Apparently he's an up and coming politician, the guy sounds like an idiot to me; more than likely from a rich family and so far away from the daily reality of life that the only light he sees comes out of his own arse!
Personally I hope he finds himself in a situation where he has to depend on our '60 year mistake', we'll soon see how dependent he is on the 'bloated and under-funded institution' he will be.
America is very lucky to be lead by a charismatic and intelligent president for a change, one only hopes he gets his way and restores the worlds belief in forward looking politics, peace and equality for all.

Operation Success

Posted in Uncategorized on 11/08/2009 by KingOfAnkh

In another medical related post, I'm pleased to say that my father has finally had his operation to remove his cancerous prostate.

By all accounts everything went well, he was in and out of hospital within a day and is now convalescing at home. It's been a long old haul since he was diagnosed with cancer, seeing the consultants and taking all the tests, then the decision was made to operate after the drugs and chemotherapy managed to restrict the growth of the cancer.
He's been in and out of hospital half a dozen times to have the operation, but due to a skin complaint they wouldn't operate because of the risk of infection, and the old goat is 79 years old so they wouldn't take the risk. So the whole family is glad he's finally got the op.  Now we just have to wait and see if the cancer has been successfully removed.
It sort of makes a mockery of the US debate about a national healthcare service, my father is in the twilight years of his life and yet the NHS has just spent tens of thousands in treating him like they would any other in a similar situation.

Dumb Ass Quote of the Year

Posted in Uncategorized on 11/08/2009 by KingOfAnkh
I had to share this with you, it made me really laugh out loud.

Anti-health-care loon says Stephen Hawking wouldn't stand a chance under British health care system

From Dispatches From the Culture Wars' "Dumbass Quote of the Day" file, an anti-health-care op-ed that says that Stephen Hawking wouldn't get any health care in the UK because our "socialist" system doesn't value the lives of disabled people. As Culture Wars notes, "Stephen Hawking was born and raised in the UK and has lived there all his life. He teaches at Cambridge. That's in the UK. This ranks up there with the French not having a word for entrepreneur."

People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldn't have a chance in the U.K., where the National Health Service would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless.

How House Bill Runs Over Grandma (via Dispatches From the Culture Wars

I have continued to read with abject horror how stupid most of these American anti-state healthcare nutters are.  Over here in the UK we have been lucky enough to have the National Health Service since just after WW2 and what a service it is.
Nobody is turned away from free medical aid, regardless of how rich or poor you are, which country you hail from, what race or colour you are or if you are old or handicapped. In my dealings with national healthcare the standards have been exemplary and the professionalism of the staff are second to none.
Sure, we also have out private healthcare for those who want an even higher level of personal care (e.g. your own room and a slave instead of a nurse) or cosmetic surgery, but with our new laws you can no longer use private healthcare to 'jump the queue' for transplants and other limited services.

I just can't see why some American people are so against a National Healthcare Trust, it's not going to undermine the level of healthcare at all, in fact it will make it better.
They may say it's too costly, I say look at how many trillions of dollars you have spent fighting yet another lost war, a tenth of the US military budget would easily cover the cost of Obama's plans.
They keep mentioning that certain individuals or groups will not get the care they need because certain treatments are too expensive, well I'm thinking most Americans have insurance to cover any such a contingency anyway, even though nobody would be turned away from treatment should they need it.  There have been certain cases in the UK where there is a 'post-code lottery' as to whether or not you can receive certain drugs due to budget shortfalls within an area, but most of these cases involved drugs which were not registered as safe in our country and offered little or no difference in helping to treat the individual involved or they wanted an extra drug that was not specified by their consultants, in which case you have the choice to go private.

Over here in the UK we keep hearing horror stories from US healthcare when poor people without a credit card are refused medical aid, or if they are given the care they needed and have no insurance they might as well die as the costs involved would kill them financially anyway, so surely free medical care for all would be a good thing.

It’s All Quiet

Posted in Uncategorized on 10/08/2009 by KingOfAnkh

Since the disaster I have noticed one thing more than most. The utter quietness of my flat.

The pumps and filters have been turned off, so the constant hum and whir is no longer a soothing background noise, a noise that has been part of my life for the last five years.
Each time I walked into the flat I always used to say "hello fishies" and then go over to see them, I still do it out of habit, even though there is only an empty tank.
I still haven't had the heart to dismantle the setup, I am somewhat in denial about the whole thing, but I have to do something soon otherwise it will begin to smell because the filters have been turned off.  Imagine your house smelling of stagnant sea water.. Not nice…
Some of you will know that I have been looking to adopt a cat recently, but after this setback I'm unsure of myself as a carer. Could I bring myself to love another being so soon after a huge loss such as what I have endured? Am I capable?
2009 has certainly been a trial for me so far and there's months left as well! In fact I'd say the last two years have been utterly hellish for the best part, and this isn't me being all melodramatic and depressive either!
I think I deserve a break, someone needs to lift this hex on my soul and let me live once again.

Disaster

Posted in Uncategorized on 08/08/2009 by KingOfAnkh

A horrible thing has happened, all of my fish just died suddenly.

I just don't know what happened. I fed them as usual with the usual food at the usual time, they all looked in great spirits and healthy, an hour later half of them had died and the others were close.
I ran to sort out a water change and to try and salvage the guys who were still alive, putting them in fresh saltwater in the vain hope that whatever poison that was killing them would wash out of their system with clean water, but alas they all died.
Poor Foxy, I've had him over four years and he was like a best friend to me. Puffy the water spitting Puffer is no more, the two tangs and the convict blenny, all dead!
I suspect that the flake I fed them was tainted somehow, that can be the only reason, I just don't know. I'll run tests on the water tomorrow to see if the water got poisoned, if so I'll have to get rid of all the live rock as well. I know I shouldn't think about costs when my pets have just died, but that was a very expensive disaster as well as a sad loss.
I could possibly sell the rock for about £200-300 if it's not tainted as well because I'm not going to start all over again when I can't afford the best. I'm sure I could break down the tank and sell off all the parts individually, but I just can't face doing it today.
I just can't believe it, I'm numb!

Boiled Egg

Posted in Uncategorized on 07/08/2009 by KingOfAnkh

Some of you might be wondering why I've been posting various pictures of vegetables over the last few days. There was no particular reason, I just wanted to see if people would comment on the most banal of posts and to see how long it would take until somebody asked me what the hell I was playing at.

I'm glad someone did ask in the end, do you know how hard it is to find pictures of solitary vegetables on the web? Very hard!  Anyhow, whilst I was searching I found this little picture, it disgusted me so much I don't think I'll ever be able to eat another boiled egg.
Not even Edwina Currie and the Salmonella crisis stopped me eating eggs, but this picture just might!
