Sleeping

Posted in Uncategorized on 14/02/2010 by KingOfAnkh

I bought this app for the iPhone a couple of weeks ago, Sleep Cycle. Its main function is to measure how you sleep and learn your cycle so when it comes to wake up time it wakes you at the opportune moment to make you feel most refreshed. As I don't have to use an alarm clock at the moment I generally use it to see how well I sleep.

As you will see from the screenshots from the last ten days, I have some better nights than others. If you click on the image you should be able to zoom into the picture to see the graphs.
The best sleep cycle generally oscillates from light sleep to deep sleep in regular intervals, allowing you to shut down completely and to dream. As you all know, both types of sleep are very important for our physical and mental wellbeing.
What I have found interesting is the effect of alcohol on my sleep. One night in particular stands out.
As you can see, this nights sleep was not really sleep, more like a coma. I had been drinking most of the day on Saturday, it was the opening matches of the Six Nations Championship, so I was down the pub for 3pm and I lasted until midnight. This is probably the most I've had to drink since I was a teenager, to be honest I have no idea how I managed to get home, let alone set up my phone to record how I slept.
You can see how dead to the world I was, I doubt very much if I'd have awoken if there was a fire or any kind of emergency going on.
According to the people in the know, this kind of sleep is bad for your psychological health because you don't enter REM sleep, so imagine how an alcoholic sleeps..
No wonder most of the winos I've known throughout my life have been total wrecks.
Another interesting thing I noticed is that according to the readings I dream quite a few times throughout each evening but other than a couple of occasions I don't remember doing so.
I have always been pretty poor on remembering my dreams, but I always seem to remember nightmares, so it's nice to know that I'm actually going through the motions even if I don't remember doing so.
I've found this app a totally fascinating experience and I'll continue to use it. I've yet to record a night where I've had a night terror or a succubus/sleep paralysis event, so no doubt I'll probably share those graphs in the future.

Political Bus

Posted in Uncategorized on 12/02/2010 by KingOfAnkh

I had to go into town today to partake of the usual demeaning by a jobsworth government employee. However on my way back home I was accosted by a couple of radio presenters for the local station. They bravely approached me, quite a feat as I look like a hairy Hell's Angel at the moment, I don't know what they were expecting, but they wanted to question me about politics.

It soon became apparent that these guys hadn't done any homework whatsoever, I was asking them more pertinent questions and they didn't have a clue how to follow up on my answers, so I eventually just gave them what they wanted, uneducated answers, after all, if they didn't even know who the local MP was, what was the point of me sharing my wealth of knowledge about current affairs?
Christ knows if I'll be on the radio, nor if anybody actually listens to the darn thing around this area, but since they didn't even take my name, I think I may have overly scared them.
After this event I managed to miss my usual bus, much to my dismay as I had to wait a further half an hour, not so bad but it was raining and rather cold. However I wish I'd not bothered with the interview after I boarded the next bus. The driver was a mentalist.
He was a little late arriving, I'll give him that, but when public safety and the Highway Code are the most overriding factors when driving a bus, this guy was something else. He took off a wing mirror on another bus, got beeped at by many other motorists for pulling out in front of them and drove over so many kerbs by cornering badly, I was getting rather twitchy to say the least.
You know it's not you when the old women on the bus are gripping hold of the chairs with grim determination and giving out a sigh of relief when the bus stops.
I really should write a letter of complaint, but I really can't be bothered.

Naked Rambling

Posted in Uncategorized on 09/02/2010 by KingOfAnkh

This is a truly sad tale of a man who has lost sight of any meaning of what he once stood for. Stephen Gough is a relatively unknown person who pops into the media now and again because of his quest to walk the length of the UK naked. You might know him better as The Naked Rambler.

Fair play to the bloke, if that is your bag then go for it, personally I think we live in one of the worst countries on the planet to attempt such a feat, mainly because of the cold weather but also because of Middle England's stuck up attitude.
Mr Gough has spent most of the last seven years in jail for public indecency and contempt of court, perhaps he should swallow his pride and wear clothes for long enough to get past the authorities so that he could possibly take quieter routes to his destinations without attracting the attention of jobsworth policemen.
In a way I admire his stance against the norm, who are we to say that his personal quest is wrong? Let's face it, we're all born the same and the fact that social attitudes prevent us from walking about naked doesn't mean that people of differing beliefs shouldn't be allowed to do so within reason. Ok, I might draw the line about parading outside schools and such, but this guy was mainly walking across empty spaces. But as his quest was constantly persecuted by the authorities, he's become more militant to the point that he will no longer wear clothes to court and once he is released he strips off and gets arrested again.
Interestingly an internet campaign to support him garnered no supporters on the day he was in court, perhaps this should be a catalyst for Mr Gough to realise that nobody really cares for the sacrifice he is making with his liberty.
However I wish to put forward that nakedness in public has a long history in the UK. Antony Gormley's Fourth Plinth art project was an example, plus once a year there is the World Naked Bike Ride, which takes place over several cities across the UK, just to name a couple of examples.
I can't see much in the way of any difference from Mr Gough's quest to any other example other than personal victimisation, after all, if you arrest one man for walking around naked then you should arrest 8000 people riding their bicycles naked. I have always thought the law as an impartial institution, but in this case it seems that it isn't.

So It Begins…

Posted in Uncategorized on 06/02/2010 by KingOfAnkh

Today is the beginning of my favourite sporting event of the year, the RBS Six Nations Rugby Championship. Being a proud Welshman I'm rather excited about it all, and today's match is against England, which for us Welshies is the match of the tournament. It's pretty much a grudge match, there's no love lost between the sides, I suppose it's a chance for us celts to get one back at the oppressors of our nation without too much bloodshed.

Where will I be? I'll be proudly wearing my new Welsh rugby shirt in the middle of a bunch of English blokes down the local pub, throwing insults and generally screaming a lot when our guys make a break for the try line.

Although I'm a proud wearer of our national sides sportswear, I have never bought a red shirt before, it's just not my colour, but for this year, the away strip colour was yellow and that is even less my colour. So rather than wear my old strips, which are looking a bit tatty nowadays, I spent my christmas money on a new red shirt. A rather extravagant purchase on my part as it cost as much as a months worth of food. But national pride comes before hunger in my book, so food be damned.
I know you're all wanting a picture of me in the said shirt, but I can't be arsed to fix up the tripod to take one, if you're lucky I'll post one in a later post.
One of the aspects of the game that I like is the camaraderie between us in the pub. The playful and sometimes viciously barbed insults thrown across the room by half drunk Irishmen, retorts by a Scots and usually banal attempts of wit by the English. Sadly there are almost never any French amongst us, which is a shame because nobody likes the foul smelling cowards and they do bring the rest of the rabble together into a single unified nationalistic force.
My predictions for this year? Sadly France to win, Ireland second followed by England, Wales, Scotland and Italy to pick up the wooden spoon. Not a very good prediction for my team, but a realistic one with all the injuries we have and it does reflect the dominance of the cowardly smelly ones. But who knows, stranger things have happened, like the time we won the Grand Slam a few years back out of the blue after a losing streak of 27 years.
So, come about 5pm GMT, keep your fingers crossed for me, I'll be slightly tipsy by then, proudly wearing my new shirt, surrounded by the enemy. There is no greater feeling than being Welsh in the middle of England when our side beat the English. If we do so today, expect the pub to empty as quickly as a flushing toilet after a vindaloo, leaving only a proud Welshman standing amid the ruins.

e-Book Wars

Posted in Uncategorized on 01/02/2010 by KingOfAnkh

Over the last week or so with the unveiling of Apples iPad, the term e-book has been seen more often in the media, most recently today with a trade spat between the publisher McMillan and Amazon over the pricing of said e-books.

I can already see where this will be heading and unfortunately the losers will be the publishers as they are trying to hold onto an old business model than no longer works for the digital age.
As we all know all new books come out as hardbacks and you generally have to pay a premium to be able to read them in this format, or alternatively wait a bit longer at the library as the new books are usually more popular and there is invariably less copies due to the price. Then they release the paperback edition a few months later, or in some cases up to a year later. Personally, in the case of Pratchett books I have gone out on the day of release to purchase a hardback copy as I simply can't wait for months on end for a cheaper release months down the line.
However, with the emerging market of e-books, the publishers want to reserve the right to keep a cost structure that reflects the hardback/paperback releases. Fair enough I say, but what they have to remember is, what they are essentially selling is a digital copy of a real book, it has next to nothing of substance as a real book has, it doesn't have the production costs a real book has, in fact it doesn't even have the associated logistical costs involved in delivering the book nor in dealing with resellers and their cut of the profits, so one would think that the publishers would make a huge saving by producing these e-books and pass it on to their customers. Alas this is not so, from initial signals from the publishers they want to sell e-books at the $15 range, a price Amazon doesn't like as they want to sell them at $10, which for me is a fairer price as all you are getting is a digital file.
I see why the publishers are trying to keep the pricing high, they want to protect their hardback sales, but I say that people who wish to buy hardback copies will still do so, in fact I don't think people will turn completely over to digital books any time soon, bookphiles are here to stay.
I can see a lot of people turning to piracy due to the price fixing of these e-books, much in the same way it has happened to music and films, after all, who wants to pay through the nose for something when you can get exactly the same thing for free. The publishers would be better off offering the e-books at the same release date at a fair price, people who appreciate an author will undoubtedly pay for the file or book, whichever format they prefer, I just don't see the point of penalising your customers to protect one format over another.
I hope in the future that established authors take matters into their own hands by publishing their own novels through a digital store, I'd say that the big guns out there don't really need the advertising associated with book releases, just imagine the buzz of a new Harry Potter book, hardly any advertising required as the media would go into a frenzy if J.K Rowling had a press release stating her intentions.
I'd suspect that the author would get a far better return from publishing this way as well as I think they are getting next to nothing in the way of renumeration out of the cost of a book to us. I don't know how much they get out of a £16 book, but I'd imagine it would be in the pence rather than the pounds, whereas if they distributed a file through the iTunes store they would get 70% of the cost price, makes more sense to sell digitally.
Although I already have thousands of e-books in my collection, I'd still fork out for real books from authors I enjoy, so my book buying habits have not changed one bit since the advent of e-books, in fact I'd say I buy more books now as I have already read the e-books and want to have a hard copy on my bookshelf. Where the book business is losing out from me is at the library, but the publishers have never moaned about library books, in a way this is a form of legalised copyright theft, one book being lent out to thousands, for free, imagine the loss to the publishers!!!
I don't hear an outcry for a ban on libraries, those horrible dens of copyright theft that promote child prostitution and fund terrorism.
I find myself thinking that now is the time for the publishers to get this right, learn from the mistakes of the music and film industries and action a plan for cheap e-books for all, offer back-catalogues for free, allow libraries to distribute DRM free files and not to be afraid of the word free. Sometimes 'free' means more, especially when there are other ways of monetising digital media by offering other merchandise for customers to spend their money on.
The old ways are dying, it will be the brave publisher who survives the upcoming tempest.

Identity Theft Viewpoint

I thought I'd share this snippet from David Mitchell & Robert Webb's radio sketch show. It's about identity theft. Made me smile and it's exactly how I'd react if it happened to me.

Pickled Eggs

Posted in Uncategorized on 26/01/2010 by KingOfAnkh

A few weeks ago I made a batch of pickled eggs, I've never made any before and today was the day I tasted one. It was actually rather scrumptious. I've surprised myself to be honest, not that I'm a bad cook, I just somehow expected it to go horribly wrong.

The whole escapade came about because I bought two doz. eggs too many, you know how it is, you're down the shop and you forget what you have at home and I'm a huge lover of eggs so it's one of those staples I always have around the house. So I ended up with a vast amount of eggs in the house, I'm sure I would have easily worked myself through them but I didn't fancy the side effects of constipation and sulphurous farts for a couple of weeks and I knew I had a spare jar and some pickling vinegar in the cupboard from last years good intention to actually make some pickles.

What I did was to look up a basic recipe online, discovered the method everyone seemed to use and decided to not listen to anything they said and went about making it my way.
I simply boiled the eggs to an inch of their lives, peeled and placed them in the jar, in a pan I poured enough white vinegar and some ginger, chillies, bay leaf, cinnamon, salt & pepper, then boiled the whole lot to release the flavours and poured it over the eggs. Let it cool down and sealed the jar. Hey presto!
My only problem was that you have to wait about three weeks for them to mature, I simply don't have the patience these days, but I did manage to wait twenty days before I gave in to the temptation.
So the verdict? I think they're just as good as the mass marketed rubbish you get, if not better! I hate to blow my own trumpet, so I wont, but next time I will add cloves of garlic and more fresh chillies just to add extra pep.
For my first foray into the pickled egg making world I'm very pleased with myself, I think I may even be more cocky next time by adding beetroot into the mix so I can have pink eggs.
Now all I need is more jars……

Sad Day

Posted in Uncategorized on 25/01/2010 by KingOfAnkh

I got a bit of a shock this morning, a guy I know from down the pub has tragically died today after a motorbike accident last week. Although I wouldn't include him in my immediate friends circle, I had spent a few evenings down the pub having a laugh with him and on occasion went round to his flat for an after pub smoke/drink. He was an intelligent guy and contributed to the crossword corner on many occasions. He will be missed by many of us in our corner of the pub, you certainly couldn't miss him as he was a pretty big chap, tall and strong, so I suppose this is why I was so surprised to hear that he'd passed away after he got through the worst as it were.

We knew it was pretty bad, they already had to remove a kidney and some of his colon due to internal injuries, we also knew his legs were shattered and there was a possibility that he might have lost a foot after he was stable enough. But even though we heard how serious things were, he'd been conscious and lucid, so I suppose we all thought that he'd be ok.
Unfortunately I have known far too many people who have come to an early demise due to motorbikes, or rather other vehicles ploughing into them as is usually the case. My cousin Alwyn was one, he'd been waiting by a traffic light when a drunk driver drove into him. In fact I could easily provide double figures of people I have personally known who have had fatal accidents on bikes.
For the very simple reason that you have little or no protection on a bike I have always distrusted them and in fact discouraged people from riding them. The sad thing is, no matter how many people get killed on these things, they still seem to be as popular as ever.
